Want to hear some music?

During one of my days off during the holidays I showed Jenn a woodworker’s blog post about a beautiful wooden mallet for adjusting plane irons. Granted wanted to see too and immediately wanted me to make one for him as well. After a few more days asking I decided it would be a good way to practice some wood turning, so I used some scrap pieces of maple and walnut and turned the handle and built a couple mallets for the boys. When I made them almost a month ago I figured they’d be lucky to last three months. They’re in pretty rough shape now, but they might last longer than I originally thought.

This week I read another blog post by a woodworker, writer and educator that included a fitting observation:

“Want to hear some music? Give kids saws and hammers. The music is divine.”

The boys have been making plenty of music in the basement recreating the barn raising scene from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
